CBCEDA adjusts its strategic priorities each year to reflect the changes that are occurring within the region. The RDA is redefining some of the strategic priorities to better reflect and streamline new programs, projects, and initiatives as a result of these changes. As well, the RDA is ensuring that these strategic priorities are in line with the recommendations from the strategic plan that the RDA has been indicated to take the lead.
Strategic Planning
The Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority works to promote and educate the community about the importance of planning and prioritizing their recommendations when developing projects and initiatives for their communities. As well, CBCEDA encourages communities to ensure that their projects and initiatives are in line with and support the strategies of key stakeholders within our region as well as the Cape Breton County Strategic Plan 2006-2016.
It is the responsibility of the RDA to ensure that there is a strategic plan for their region and to provide detail on its implementation through strong communications with partners (public/ private/community).
Population Program
The Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority works with partners to discuss, to identify and to research opportunities that may exist for populating our region. CBCEDA works at administering the Newcomer Program that includes working iin partnership with the Nova Scotia Nominee Program by delivering the Community Identified Program as well as having a Navigator Officer within our region.
Through these types of initiatives, our region will become diverse and the population base will be built resulting in filling employer skill gaps. Our region will become known as a welcoming community that is inviting newcomers to move into our region.

Business Development
On behalf of partners, CBCEDA has developed the guidelines, contracts, and procedures for the Downtown Facade Program. CBCEDA continues to compile information and take inventory of existing businesses and buildings within the core areas within our region to determine the feasibility of Facade Programs. When a program is approved, CBCEDA facilitates and manages the Downtown Facade Programs on behalf of partners.
The RDA is also implementing the BRE (Business Retention & Expansion) program for the region along with providing information on business start ups through the Canada Business Network.
Community/Public/Private Projects & Initiatives
Each year, the RDA works with a number of partners by managing, supporting, and/or being involved with 100s of projects & intiatives each year that support community, sector, and infrastructure development that will work to:
1. Encourage and support community development and build capacity; 2. Build strength and capacity within various sectors by providing relevant information; 3. Add new or build on existing physical or technology infrastructure within our region.
CBCEDA support varies according to the project or initiative. Our involvement has included:
- Facilitating, coordinating, and advising.
- Managing contracts on behalf of partners.
- Providing financial assistance needed to access other funding.
- Compiling information; assisting in developing proposals, tendering packages, and concepts; completing applications and any other correspondence required.
- Referring to other entities that may be able to assist.
Marketing Cape Breton County
The Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority has a very specific role in marketing our region. The local RDA provides information to entities on attracting and delivering events and conference through communications and marketing. At times, the RDA will also work in partnership to identify and attract events or conferences to be held in our region or use events to promote our region.
CBCEDA also develops and implements marketing plans for specific projects. The local RDA uses its communications to promote the roles and responsibilities of partnerss in all stages of implementing projects and initiatives for our region.
Communications
CBCEDA uses a variety of mediums to communicate its mandate including newspaper; ads & editorials; cable; presentations; radio; activity reports; networking; pamphlets; etc. As the local RDA, CBCEDA receives at least 10 invitations a week to participate in meetings, discussions, workshops, and events throughout the region that are focused on economic development initiatives or projects.
