"This document was created to be included with our promotional packages for Business Recruitment and Retirement Cape Breton programs. We are confident that this information will assist those interested in investing or retiring in Cape Breton by providing an overview of our economy, our quality of life, our culture, and our communities."
Metropolitan Cape Breton is the eastmost area of Cape Breton Island. The Island is located at the north-eastern tip of Nova Scotia, connected to the mainland by the Canso Causeway. The Trans Canada Highway runs through the Island from the Causeway to North Sydney, the terminus for ferry service to Newfoundland. Metropolitan Cape Breton is easily accessed by land, sea, or air. With a population of approximately 117,900, Metropolitan Cape Breton is the third largest metropolitan area in the Maritime provinces and the commercial centre of the Island. It is comprised of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, a municipal unit that amalgamated the former municipalities of Sydney, Glace Bay, New Waterford, North Sydney, Sydney Mines, Dominion, Louisbourg, and the County of Cape Breton. This amalgamation has created a unique "community of communities," as each of these historic communities keeps its individual character and charm while contributing to the growth of the entire metropolitan area. The residents of Cape Breton enjoy a high quality of life that is constantly being improved. Major infrastructure projects, including road improvements, waterfront and downtown developments, new educational facilities, and new or expanded recreational amenities, add to the quality of life and continue to create a dynamic environment for business development. Friendly people, safe neighborhoods, spectacular scenery, a thriving cultural scene, and world-class recreational facilities are also key elements of the community.
