| Cape Breton has an exciting and diverse history. The Mi'kmaq were the first peoples of the Island and we continue to feel the strength and beauty of their cultural heritage. John Cabot landed in 1497 and later, the French settled at Cheticamp, Margaree and Louisbourg. In the 18th century, the French constructed a fortress at Louisbourg which came under siege from British forces. By the mid-1800's, Highland Scots arrived and settled the land that resembled their native country. Since these times, Cape Bretons cultural community has been enriched by 37 different ethnic influences. |
